For the love of ‘Stuff’

“If your house was burning, what would you take with you?”

Not until very recently – to be precise, only a few days back – its been all over the news channels that an entire state of India (Kerala) was ravaged due to floods, it almost brought the whole state to a stand still. People were moved out of their houses, others stranded. Most houses were flooded, destroying everything that the water came in contact with. Vehicles were found floating in water.

Among all that was destroyed would be things that were most precious to people. Did people think of those things at a time like that? Surely NOT. Saving lives were more important, seeing family safe took precedence over saving things.

How nice would it be if we lived everyday of or life this way? People over things

…we feel comfortable with things that we are familiar with
..we sometimes wear old clothes when new ones might be better
Clothes, like other items we have, are part of our habits, and to some extent, an extension of ourselves

We find ourselves attached to things, so when people speak ill about ‘a habit’, we feel bad, as if they’re talking about us.

I personally do not believe in attachments, be it with a person, things or a habit. I will let go.. from regularly formatting my phone to deleting old emails from my inbox, or gradually losing a friend due to minimal to zero contact.

“Letting go gives us freedom and freedom is the only condition for happiness.”

And besides, what is Attachment? It is the emotional over-dependence we put on things, or people we hold so dear. If we live our lives correctly, we don’t really need another something” to be attached to – right? We have ourselves.. and at most times, that’s enough!

I’ll end with the same question I started the blog post with…

“If your house was burning, what would you take with you?”
