Has ‘Prayer’ become a business?

Another way to make money?

Don’t expect me to believe that people do anything for FREE!!

Who knows, they might even charge you the new GST to the their fee.

Open the Goan newspaper (Herald to be more specific) and you will see advertisements of Lay brothers (or can I call them that?) ‘advertising’ their service of praying for people. Now I know I am no one to judge on how genuine they are or not, but nothing will stop me from having my say on what I think this is all about.

Some of them which read..

Apparently he isn’t too good with his spellings..guess his skill lies somewhere else!

Really!!..and how does one know there is a Demon? Witchcraft? Impressive classified ad. Now who wouldn’t fall for that!!!???)

Whatsapp and an Internet address! Keeping up with technology I see…!!

People of today are vulnerable, anything bad happens to them-they think it is because of some curse, or some black magic done on them or some other cause and they go searching for ‘people‘ who can get them rid of the so called ‘thing’ that has affected them. This is where on talking, people come to know about this Brother and that Brother, some prayer gatherings held here and there, laying of hands etc etc and things will be better. RUBBISH!

Just because my friend is going, I should also go and maybe tell my neighbor too and take her along.

I am a Roman Catholic and I do believe Jesus heals, through prayer, self prayer – Yes definitely, but from where have these ‘lay people’ sprung up in every town and village proclaiming they can heal or pray on your behalf and you will be better or your problems will be solved. Does God work only through these people? Doesn’t God listen to each individual prayer?

It is necessary to have faith but talk of Blind Faith! People running helter-skelter for problem-troubleshooting. If only there were instant solutions to everything in life..and I’m not only talking about one faith, these kind of people are all over the place, present in every religion-only called by different names.

With so many gurus, godmen and godwomen peddling their wares today. we need the Spirit’s gift of wisdom and discernment to sift and sieve the grain from the chaff.

The telephone call

aaaworkAn traveler decided to write a book about famous churches around the world. So he bought a plane ticket and took a trip to China. On his first day he was inside a church taking photographs when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read “$10,000 per call”.

The traveler, being intrigued, asked a priest who was strolling by what the telephone was used for. The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000 you could talk to God.

The traveler thanked the priest and went along his way.

Next stop was in Japan. There, at a very large cathedral, he saw the same golden telephone with the same sign under it. He wondered if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in china and he asked a nearby nun what its purpose was. She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000 he could talk to God. “O.K., thank you,” said the traveler.

He then traveled to Pakistan, Srilanka, Russia, Germany and France. In every church he saw the same golden telephone with the same “$10,000 per call” sign under it.

The traveler, upon leaving decided to travel to up to India to see if Indians had the same phone.

He arrived in Kerala, the southern state in India, and again, in the first church he entered, there was the same golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read “One Rupee per call.”

The traveler was surprised so he asked the priest about the sign. “Father, I’ve traveled all over World and I’ve seen this same golden telephone in many churches. I’m told that it is a direct line to Heaven, but in the countries I have visited the price was $10,000 per call. Why is it so cheap here?” The priest smiled and answered, “Son, you’re in God’s own country now, it’s a local call”

(Had to share) Ever heard God Speaking to you? ……READ below:

Matthew 6:9-13

(boy)- ‘Our Father which art in heaven…’

(God)—Yes?

(boy)- Don’t interrupt me. I’m praying.

(God)—But you called me.

(boy)-Called you? I didn’t call you. I’m praying. “Our Father which art in heaven…”

(God)—There you did it again.

(boy)-Did what?

(God)—Called me. You said, “Our Father which art in heaven.” Here I am…What’s on your mind?

(boy)-But I didn’t mean anything by it. I was, you know, just saying my prayers for the day. I always say the Lord’s Prayer. It makes me feel good, kind of like getting a duty done.

(God)—All right. Go on.

(boy)-“Hallowed be thy name…”

(God)—Hold it. What do you mean by that?

(boy) By what?

(God)—By “hallowed be thy name”?

(boy)-It means… it means… Good grief, I don’t know what it means. How should I know? It’s just a part of the prayer. By the way, what does it mean?

(God)—It means honored, holy, wonderful.

(boy)-Hey, that makes sense. I never thought about what “hallowed” meant before. “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

(God)—Do you really mean that?

(boy)-Sure, why not?

(God)—What are you doing about it?

(boy)-Doing? Nothing, I guess. I just think it would be kind of neat if you got control of everything down here like you have up there.

(God)—Have I got control of you?

(boy)-Well, I go to church.

(God)—That isn’t what I asked you. What about your bad temper? You’ve really got a problem there, you know. And then there’s the way you spend your money—all on yourself. And what about the kind of books you read?

(boy)-Stop picking on me! I’m just as good as some of the rest of those people at the church.

(God)—Excuse me. I thought you were praying for my will to be done. If that is to happen, it will have to start with the ones who are praying for it. Like you, for example.

(boy)-Oh, all right. I guess I do have some hang-ups. Now that you mention it, I could probably name some others.

(God)—So could I.

(boy)-I haven’t thought about it very much until now, but I really would like to cut out some of those things. I would like to, you know, be really free.

(God)—Good. Now we’re getting somewhere. We’ll work together, you and I. Some victories can truly be won. I’m proud of you.

(boy)-Look, Lord, I need to finish up here. This is taking a lot longer than it usually does. “Give us this day, our daily bread.”

(God)—You need to cut out the bread. You’re overweight as it is.

(boy)-Hey, wait a minute! What is this, “Criticize me day”? Here I was doing my religious duty, and all of a sudden you break in and remind me of all my hang-ups.

(God)—Praying is a dangerous thing. You could wind up changed, you know. That’s what I’m trying to get across to you. You called me, and here I am. It’s too late to stop now. Keep praying, I’m interested in the next part of your prayer…(pause).

Well, go on.

(boy)-I’m scared to.

(God)—Scared? Of what?

(boy)-I know what you’ll say.

(God)—Try me and see.

(boy)-“Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.”

(God)—What about Ann?

(boy)-See? I knew it! I knew you would bring her up! Why, Lord, she’s told lies about me, spread stories about my family. She never paid back the debt she owes me. I’ve sworn to get even with her!

(God)—But your prayer? What about your prayer?

(boy)-I didn’t mean it.

(God)—Well, at least you’re admitting it. But it’s not much fun carrying that load of bitterness around inside, is it?

(boy)-No. But I’ll feel better as soon as I get even. Boy, have I got some plans for that neighbor. She’ll wish she had never moved into this neighborhood.

(God)—You won’t feel any better. You’ll feel worse. Revenge isn’t sweet. Think of how unhappy you already are. But I can change all that.

(boy)-You can? How?

(God)—Forgive Ann. Then I’ll forgive you. Then the hate and sin will be Ann’s problem and not yours. You will have settled your heart.

(boy)-Oh, you’re right. You always are. And more than I want to revenge Ann, I want to be right with you….(pause)…(sigh). All right. All right. I forgive her. Help her to find the right road in life, Lord. She’s bound to be awfully miserable now that I think about it. Anybody who goes around doing the things she does to others has to be out of it. Someway, somehow, show her the right way.

(God)—There now! Wonderful! How do you feel?

(boy)-Hmmm. Well, not bad. Not bad at all. In fact, I feel pretty great! You know, I don’t think I’ll have to go to bed uptight tonight for the first time since I can remember. Maybe I won’t be so tired from now on because I’m not getting enough rest.

(God)—You’re not through with your prayer. Go on.

(boy)-Oh, all right. “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

(God)—Good! Good! I’ll do that. Just don’t put yourself in a place where you can be tempted.

(boy)-What do you mean by that?

(God)—Don’t turn on the TV when you know the laundry needs to be done and the house needs to be picked up. Also, about the time you spend coffee-ing with your friends, if you can’t influence the conversation to positive things, perhaps you should re-think the value of those friendships. Another thing, your neighbors and friends shouldn’t be your standard for “keeping up”. And please don’t use me for an escape hatch.

(boy)-I don’t understand the last part.

(God)—Sure you do. You’ve done it a lot of times. You get caught in a bad situation. You get into trouble and then you come running to me, “Lord, help me out of this mess, and I promise you I’ll never do it again.” You remember some of those bargains you tried to make with me?

(person)-Yes, and I’m ashamed, Lord. I really am.

(God)—Which bargain are you remembering?

(person)-Well, there was the night that the children and I were home alone. The wind was blowing so hard I thought the roof would go any minute and tornado warnings were out. I remember praying, “Oh, God, if you spare us, I’ll never skip my devotions again.”

(God) –Did you?

(boy)-I’m sorry, Lord, I really am. Up until now I thought that if I just prayed the Lord’s Prayer every day, then I could do what I liked. I didn’t expect anything to happen like it did.

(God)—Go ahead and finish your prayer.

(person)-“For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.” Amen

(God)—Do you know what would bring me glory? What would really make me happy?

(boy)-No, but I’d like to know. I want now to please you. I can see what a mess I’ve made of my life. And I can see how great it would be to really be one of your followers.

(God)—You just answered the question.

(boy)-I did?

(God)—Yes. The thing that would bring me glory is to have people like you truly love me. And I see that happening between us. Now that some of these old sins are exposed and out of the way, well, there is no telling what we can do together.

(boy) – Lord, let’s see what we can make of me, OK? Amen!

God, Our Loving Father doesn’t require long, proper English without grammatical-error prayers, just a simple conversation. You may not hear him reply you, but the joy in your heart after talking to HIM says it all, that God has heard and he will give you what you truly deserve. Afterall HE loves you.

God speaks!

“Look at the birds: they do not sow seeds, gather a harvest and put it in barns; yet   your     Father in Heaven takes care of them! Aren’t you worth much more than birds? Can any of you live a bit longer by worrying about it?”

Matthew, Chapter 6-verse 26 & 27

Maria closed the bible, closed her eyes and prayed for a while ‘Jesus tomorrow is my interview. Be with me, and give me the courage to answer it well. Now the post was for a teacher in a reputed college in Bangalore, more than 250 applicants were to apply for that single post. I Maria, a simple village girl, an orphan with two sisters…is it possible to compete? She shed two drops of tears which blew off the candle.

2 drops of H2O+NaCl. Rest of the body contains 8.465 litres of water and 67.750 grams of NaCl said her naughty little sister Michelle, the youngest and brightest sister. Introducing Michelle, naughty yet adorable, Maria’s little sister-oblivious to the word ‘feelings’, always up to new tricks or sharing the loads of information that she is taught from school to her other two sisters.

“Please don’t disturb me; I have an important Interview to attend tomorrow, and I need to prepare for it. Maria opened her eyes and kept her rosary on the table. She gave a requesting glance to the picture of Jesus and Mother Mary, looked at the photo of her parents Joaquim and Racheal. She was much attached to her mother Racheal, she was the kindest human being to her daughters, who taught Maria to pray, to love and most importantly to always care and look after her two younger sisters, but as God most often does, takes away the people we love the most. Maria always believed no matter how far away she was away from her parents, they would always look down upon their three children and bless them from up above.

Maria, along with her two sisters Michelle and Monica ate dinner and went off to sleep. As Maria went off to sleep, the imaginary illusions of her mother and the Interview whistled thru her mind.

“Beep” “Beep” the clock struck 8 a.m, Maria got up and rubbed her eyes saw Michelle next to her with a book twice her size by her side, she opened the book and said to herself ‘so this is where she gets the equations from!!’ Maria, went to the bathroom, freshened up quickly ate 2 slices of bread, drunk a cup of coffee and went off for the interview. To her good fortune out of the 250 applicants, only 165 turned up…she said to herself “I still have to get the better of the 164, to be selected” she made the sign of the cross, looked upwards for blessings and flipped open her file for last minute revisions, checked if she had brought the necessary documents, Bio Data, Application Letter and the necessary certificates. Everything was in place, she was ready.

No: 115, Maria Joseph called the attendant, the sound dribbled through her body. She stood up and confidently walked into the Interview room.

Time passed, Maria finally walked out of the office, and she wore an emotionless expression on here face. She slowly walked out of the office, caught the bus and headed home. Michelle saw her entering the house and said “395 drops of H2O+NaCl, 4.365 litres of water and 27.650 grams of NaCl wasted” What a girl…she continued “4659 cells damaged, 2.7% of brain used and 1 hour 37 minutes 49 seconds 25 micro seconds wasted”

Maria was obviously sad, the Interview hadn’t gone as per expectations, she did try her best, her sister would never understand. She said “Why God? Why? What did I do wrong, I prepared so well…Why does everything have to go against me? Maa wanted me to be successful, I have tried but I have failed and broke into tears. She cried in front of the alter. As irritated as she got with Michelle’s words, she did manage a smile now and then when she blurted out her equations, she after all was the naughty little sister…her mother used to say, in the exact words of her mother “You are looking at our next little genius superstar” that made Michelle very happy and she would always make it a point to learn one new equation everyday, to the annoyance of Maria.

After a while, she wiped her tears and decided to do a little bit of household work, suddenly she was attracted by a light near the bible, when she went near she saw it was a firefly. It flew around the bible and when she approached the bible, it flew away. Maria felt an inspiration from the light that glowed from the bible, she opened the bible. It was the verse of Matthew, and the paragraph read;

It was the same passage that she read before, this time she understood the meaning behind those words, she looked at the photograph of her mother, it was as if her mother was trying to tell her something;

“Listen to what God says…..”

“Your future lies in his hands, do not be tensed or worried”
